Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to the Treasurer of the Leith Hill Musical Festival

Letter No.: VWL4423

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

December 23rd 1953.

Dear Mr Treasurer,
I have today instructed my Bank (Westminster Bank 224 King’s Road, S.W.3.) to pay £120 to the account of the L.H.M.F. Westminster Bank, Dorking, on the first of January 1954 and the first of January each succeeding year until further notice. I say till further notice advisedly because a composer’s income is so variable. At present it is very large, but it may at any time dwindle to nothing!
I do not wish to dictate to your Committee as to how they should spend the money, but I should like it to be spent firstly on feeding the orchestra, and if there is any surplus, to use it for enlarging or improving the orchestra at the discretion of the conductor in consultation with the Committee.
Yours sincerely,
R Vaughan Williams
