Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to the Secretary of the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning
Letter No.: VWL4971
The White Gates,
Dorking.
29th April, 1948.
Dear Sir,
I venture to place before you the case of Dr. Sohn, 131 Bewick Road, Gateshead-on-Tyne.
Dr. Sohn is a Scientist and now has a teaching post in Newcastle. He was a refugee and is now a British subject. He tells me that early in the War he intended to go to Palestine and he sent all his scientific books there which he values at £1,000 for insurance, though he says that their actual value is much higher. He tells me that they are essential for his scientific work and advancement is his profession. He says that an agent is willing to bring these books to England but that the cost will be nearly £200. There are 800 volumes.
Is it possible for your Society to help him?
I think that the Dorking Refugee Committee might do something and a little more might come from private sources.
Perhaps you will kindly communicate direct with Dr. Sohn?
Yours faithfully
R Vaughan Williams
