Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Sir Philip Hendy
Letter No.: VWL5231
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
[March 24 1954]
To the Director,
National Portrait Gallery.
Dear Sir,
We understand that a portrait of the late Roger Quilter composer, painted by Wilfred de Glehn, R.A. is being offered to the National Portrait Gallery.
May we hope that this offer will be accepted, as we feel that Quilter’s place in English music is a very distinguished one. In our opinion, his writing – especially his songs – will be a permanent contribution to our national heritage.
Yours faithfully,
Ralph Vaughan Williams

General Notes:
This letter was apparently one of many being collected for a petition to the Director of the National Portrait Gallery. See VWL5232 for accompanying note to Leslie Woodgate, who appears to have been organising the petition, which was successful.
