Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Sinclair Logan
Letter No.: VWL2948
The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey,
14th September, 1949.
Dear Mr Logan
I was much touched and encouraged by your letter – so much more than the by ordinary praise.
I think it sounds at its best in the Cathedral and on the whole I thought it was a good performance, though there were one or two slips.1
I hope one day there will be a record, though I doubt if it would record well. Most of my work does not, except the No.6, which is a splendid record.
I wish we could have met at Hereford. If I had known you had been there I would certainly have sought you out to have a talk with you, and more than anything I want to hear you sing again, which I, alas, do too seldom.
If anything I have done gives pleasure to someone like you, I feel well rewarded.
Yrs sincerely
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Sinclair Logan, Esq.,
Corners,
Hallow, Worcester.
1. Presumably Logan had written in praise of VW’s Symphony No.3 (Pastoral) which the composer had conducted at Hereford in the Three Choirs Festival.
