Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Rutland Boughton
Letter No.: VWL1351
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
[September 1935?]
Dear Boughton
I think you are wrong and my guarantee was £15 which I enclose accordingly
I suppose you cd not in future consider an amateur orchestra with professional strengthening
I do think the Musicians Union are cutting their own throats1
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams
1. It appears that VW had offered financial support for a performance, possibly for the Bath Festival which Boughton was promoting; see also VWL1279. The Bath Weekly Chronicle reported on 31 August 1935 that RVW was one of several ‘distinguished guarantors’ of the Boughton Festival at Bath, to be held in early September.
