The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

24th October, 1951

Dear Roy
Do you think I could have your comments on my No.5. fairly soon?1 I think Barbirolli would like to have my corrected version.
By the way, I don’t know how much I owe you for your work on the “Pastoral”.2 This is a guess, if it is not enough let me know.3
In case it interests you the dress rehearsal of the P.P.4  is on the 30th and the first performance on the 31st.
Yrs
RVW

1. Symphony no.5. See VWL2283.
2. Pastoral Symphony, no.3.
3. A generous cheque was enclosed.
4. The Pilgrim’s Progress. This was a revival of the opera originally produced in April and taken to Leeds in July. The need for a dress rehearsal suggests that revisions had been made (whether to scenery, lighting or music…). It seems to have attracted no press comment whatsoever. It was not until the following 12 February that a revival was billed as a first performance “with revisions”.
