Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Roy Douglas
Letter No.: VWL2366
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
[7 February 1952] Thursday
Dear Roy
I listened to your Liszt1 – you made that nasty pompous stuff sound almost noble – what it must be on the pfte passes my imagination I have not seen Dickinson’s article2 – I usually feel about him what Whistler said “I don’t mind his blame but I cannot endure his praise”
[?I fear] you are wrong about C. Garden on Tuesday3
Orchestra only 12.30 – 1.30 the rest with pfte (or banjo? or harmonium?) 11.30 – 12.30
Yrs
RVW
1. Douglas had made an orchestration of Liszt’s Funerailles which was broadcast on February 5th.
2. A.E.F. Dickinson had written an article on VW for a music journal (not yet traced).
2. Presumably for a rehearsal of Pilgrim’s Progress.
