Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Roy Douglas
Letter No.: VWL2830
10, Hanover Terrace, N.W.1.
June 17 [1954]
Dear Roy
Ursula is away – so you will have to put up with my cacography
Now the score is nearly finished a new problem presents itself – I have
2
an idea that this work is likely to become popular with school choral societies – but, as usual, I have made the orchestration (probably unnecessarily) elaborate & difficult – wd you consider re-scoring it to bring
3
within the means of the average school orchestra – preserving as much of the original orchestration as possible?
If you wanted expert advice on school orchestras I feel sure that Bernard Shore wd advise on the vns & vas & Trew on the cellos & basses & Draper (of Charterhouse) on the wind also Wilson of Charterhouse
Of course permission wd have to be asked of the OUP
Yrs
