June 29th 1958
Dear Rosamund,
Will you come to Dorking, St Martin’s Church, on Saturday, February 14th and sing the soprano solos in Bach’s St John Passion? Rehearsal 2.30. Performance 7pm. This is a small private show, and nothing to do with the Festival and we cannot offer a fee of more than 10 guineas.1
I do hope you can come
Love from
Uncle Ralph
1. Strode had taken over the soprano solo part in the St John Passion at Dorking at short notice owing to the illness of Nicola Darwin on 27th February 1954. VW had of course died by the time of the performance on 14th February 1959, which was in any case to be conducted by William Cole, as VW had retired from conducting, although it may be assumed that he was financing the performance.
