Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Robert Longman
Letter No.: VWL1423
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
Sunday [2 June 1940]
Dear Bobby
I want to say so much and cannot.1
Only my love – and I do thank her for her beautiful life and for your beautiful life together.
It has been happy I know and has made others so happy.
Perhaps there will be no more happiness or peace for any of us now and we must be thankful for what has been.
God bless you
Ralph.
1. Bobby Longman had telephoned the previous day to say that his wife Dorothy had died.

Wartime paper. May was the only month in 1940 in which the 31st was a Friday, and it is apparent that this letter was written within a week of that day.
