Translation:
Dear Mr Gatty,
Now that I am at last back in England, I feel all the happier writing in German. I hope you received your two English pounds today which will have let you know better than ten thousand telegrams could that we have successfully come to the end of our journey. Tomorrow you must certainly go to the Matthew Passion in the Sing Akademie.
Yours fondly,
RVW.
My wife sends her best regards and will send you another wick1 very soon, since yours will soon come to an end.
1. The Vaughan Williams’s had apparently given Gatty a spirit lamp that presumably required a special wick only obtainable in England. In a letter of 13th August Adeline VW refers to sending Gatty some wicks (‘if they are too thick take out some of the stuffing’). Perhaps the lamp is part of the tea basket referred to in VWL288.
