THE LETTERS OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Lieber Herr Gattoy,

Leider habe ich absolut Deutch zu sprechen vergessen, überhaupt aber wunsche ich sehr Ihnen erzahlen welche Vergnügen wir haben von dem nichola’schen quatuor gehabt. Es war am letzten Freitag im Saal des “Royal College of Music” am Studenten-vortrag ausgeführt.
Die Erste Satz war ganz gut aber vorzüglich war das Andante – eine ganz neue melodie wirklich mit höchster Empfindung gefüllt – das Scherzo auch war ausserordentlich gut und sehr gut für die Instrumenten geschrieben als auch war alles.
Die Variationen waren nicht so gut – aber vielleicht waren sie ziemlich schlecht gespielt – und das fuga-finale war wunderschön. Ich sende hierzu ein Zettel.
Wie gehts mit Ihnen und mit Herrn Grimson? Mit viel vergnugen hören wir dass sie kommen bald nach England zurück auch haben wir eine sehr freundschaftliche einladung zu Hooton Roberts mit vielen Freuden empfangen; können sie vielleicht mit uns einige tage in London wohnen während ihre Reise nach Yorkshire. Verzeihen bitte das ich habe “sie” statt “Du” geschrieben.

Dear Mr Gatty

Unfortunately I have completely forgotten how to speak German, but I do want to tell you how much pleasure Nicholas’ quartet¹ has given us. It was played last Friday in the Hall of the Royal College of Music at a student concert.
The first movement was quite good but the andante was excellent – a completely new melody really full of the greatest feeling – the scherzo was also extraordinarily good and very well written for the instruments, as indeed was it all.
The variations were not so good – but perhaps they were not very well played – and the fugue finale was beautiful. I am sending a programme herewith.
How are you and Mr Grimson? We are very glad to hear that you will soon be coming back to England; we have received with much joy a very warm invitation to Hooton Roberts.² Can you perhaps stay with us for a few days in London on your way to Yorkshire? Please excuse me having written “sie” instead of “Du”.
