Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Reginald Thatcher (BBC)

Letter No.: VWL1439

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Sept 24 [1940]

Dear Thatcher

I shd much like the B.B.C to do my tunes – but
(1) I am not yet definitely released by the Proms
(2) I offered the 2nd performance to the Bach Choir – therefore I think they must be asked
I will let you know as soon as possible  They ought to be done by a fairly large choir –   not in the refined style of the BBC singers
Yrs sincerely

R Vaughan Williams

1. See VWL1434. The performance planned for 10th September of Six Choral Songs – to be Sung in Time of War (Catalogue of Works 1940/1)  had been cancelled because of air raids and Thatcher had offered to broadcast the work instead.
