Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Reginald Thatcher (BBC)
Letter No.: VWL1439
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
Sept 24 [1940]
Dear Thatcher
I shd much like the B.B.C to do my tunes – but
(1) I am not yet definitely released by the Proms
(2) I offered the 2nd performance to the Bach Choir – therefore I think they must be asked
I will let you know as soon as possible They ought to be done by a fairly large choir – not in the refined style of the BBC singers
Yrs sincerely
R Vaughan Williams
1. See VWL1434. The performance planned for 10th September of Six Choral Songs – to be Sung in Time of War (Catalogue of Works 1940/1) had been cancelled because of air raids and Thatcher had offered to broadcast the work instead. They were given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Leslie Woodgate, on 20 December, broadcast from Colston Hall, Bristol.
