March 28 [1944]

Dear Peterkin

I am afraid I did nothing about Aberystwith – If I thought about it at all I imagined it by now out of copyright – Surely the composer has been dead more than 50 years? 1
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1.  Peterkin had written on 21 March asking if VW had sought permission to make use of the tune Aberystwyth as the basis for the third movement of Household Music, Catalogue of Works 1940/4. It was in fact still in copyright, since the composer, Joseph Parry, had only died in 1903.
