The White Gates,
Dorking.

[About March 1942]

Dear Michael
I am going to ask for your advice and help
Boosey propose to bring out a revised edition of “Wenlock Edge”- Would you make some suggestions for improving the pfte parts
I know we can’t make a really good show of rewriting it – but we might do a little tinkering.
There are two places already marked, one on page 32 (letter E) which seems to me good.  What do you think?  The other on page 38 (at piu lento) which was my original revision but I was told it was unplayable – now I don’t think it is!
Any other suggestions wd be gratefully received.1
My love to Mary

1. Boosey & Hawkes published the full score in September 1942. In the Catalogue of Works Kennedy identifies no changes made to the musical text, and says that the edition ‘differs from the 1911 Novello edition only in the woodcut on the title-page.’ If so, this means VW decided against the changes he references here, and took up no suggestions from Mullinar.
