Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Michael Mullinar

Letter No.: VWL3673

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[August 1948]

Dear Michael

This is wonderful news – I wish you all joy – I hope it will be a daughter – what do you & Mary want?1
I realize what a responsibility you must feel it to be – but we must hope that “the Lord will provide” – or as Fanny Burney wrote “that the works of art will keep pace with the works of nature”.
Love to Mary from us both & good luck
Yrs

R Vaughan Williams

1. It seems likely that this was written in August 1948 not long before the arrival of the Mullinars’ third child on 9th September. They had already had two boys and in the event the child was a third boy, John.
