Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Maud Karpeles

Letter No.: VWL4861

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[1930s?]

Dear Maud
(1) I wd not give too much cash – I shd think £5 each wd be plenty
(2) If we simply doled the money out & they & their wives live, say, 20 years, that wd [be] very near £15 a year
(3) So I favour an annuity – including the wives
– we must try to bear up to £700 & make it a round sum of £20 a year & £25 a year each
– One point ought we not to equalize the annuities – i.e. give more to K…1  so that his annuity may work out the same?

Re your second letter

(1) I saw the first note and had it in my mind that I have the accomp – which I do not think will interfere with a correct rendering (if it does I will alter it)
(2) It is impossible within the limits of our present musical notation to give an exact notation
(3) So I should leave it as it is and add the footnotes
