My dear Margery,

The choirs surpassed themselves last night.  As usual I had my gloomy forebodings, but it was a soldier’s battle, and we won the victory in spite of the general.  Not only was the performance nearly without mistake, but it had, technically, a flow and continuity, and a spiritual imagination which we have never achieved before.  Thank you all, singers and conductors for your hard work.  I hope you feel it was worth while.  I also want to thank, through you, our splendid soloists and fine orchestra, and above all (you must promise not to leave this out) the skill, devotion , insight and courage of our Secretary.
You must also, please, thank the Ripienos from the schools for all that they added to the general success.¹
