Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Major General Robert Lock
Letter No.: VWL1739
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
January 14 [1943]
Dear General Lock
Thank you very much for your kind letter. Forgive my delay in answering, but we could not get Mrs Sternbach to make up her mind. She has now decided she would rather stay in England until her daughter has completed her school examinations in July.1
I am very sorry you have had all this trouble with so little result, but we are none the less grateful to you and Mrs Sternbach shares our gratitude.
I am so glad that we have been able to be of some help to Ursula in her trouble2 – she has been wonderfully brave.
Yours sincerely
R. Vaughan Williams

2. Michael Wood, Ursula’s husband, had died on 8 June 1942. Robert Lock was her father.
