From R. Vaughan Williams,

Dorking.

Monday [1937]

Dear Boyd-Neel
I am sorry but I feel quite dried up at present – also I’ve had enough of writing against time and I hope in future to keep everything back for a period of incubation – Whether I shall succeed I do not know – but at all events I can say that even if I started it today I should have nothing ready to my satisfaction by the end of August. Good luck to your concert at Salzburg.1
Yours sincerely
R Vaughan Williams

1. Neel had asked VW for a new work for the Boyd Neel Orchestra to perform in Salzburg in August 1937. In the event Neel asked Benjamin Britten, who produced the Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge at short notice.
