1. Canon Bark related the circumstances giving rise to VW’s letter in a covering letter to UVW (printed in R.V.W.: a biography, p.159-160): he had been music director of an Anglo-Catholic pilgrimage to the Holy Places in 1925 and, on approaching the monastery at Patmos, the whole party of 300 or more sang ‘For all the Saints’ to  VW’s Sine Nomine. The abbot had asked Mr Bark to write the tune down for their use and had provided vellum and ink for the purpose.
