Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to John Howgill (BBC)
Letter No.: VWL3261
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
January 29th 1956
Dear Mr Howgill
We are very anxious to see Arthur Benjamin’s opera on Wednesday, and as we have not got a television set I wonder if you would be so kind as to allow my wife and me to see it at Broadcasting House. We should be so grateful if this is possible.1
Yours sincerely
R. Vaughan Williams
1. The opera was the first and probably only performance of Benjamin’s poorly received opera Mañana. Edward Renton conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a section of Glyndebourne Festival Chorus with Frederick Sharp, Edith Coates, Heather Harper and Carlos Montes. Julian Bream accompanied Gita de la Fuente on the guitar.
