Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to John Buckland

Letter No.: VWL5016

The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

12th September, 1951.

How about September 28th (Friday) at 4.15? I shall be engaged before that, and as you are no pianist and I am no score-reader, and if your score is legible may I ask Mullinar1 or some other good reader to come and play it through for us?
By the way, I was 32 before I had an orchestral work performed.2
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams

(R. Vaughan Williams).

1. Michael Mullinar
2. Disregarding any performances at the Royal College of Music, VW’s Serenade in A minor was performed at the Winter Gardens, Bournemouth, on 4 April 1901, when he was only 28. The Bucolic Suite was performed there a year later. He conducted his own Heroic Elegy (minus the Triumphal Epilogue) in Leeds in 21 January 1905, when he really was 32.
