Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to John Buckland

Letter No.: VWL5025

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

May 13th 1956.

Dear Buckland,
Thank you for your letter: what you say about my new Symph. interests and intrigues me, but I don’t think I care for variations except as part of a larger scheme.1 Your suggested subject seems a little too modern for me. Please bring your boys to see me if we can arrange something in the summer holidays, but I fear it may be difficult as we have to be away such a lot. I will do my best to decipher your clarinet quintet, though I remember that you are not very helpful from that point of view!

Yrs
