[1927]

Dear Joan
I have got some new songs1 – but
(a) They are for mezzo [musical image] so I expect they are too low for you
(b) There are 6 of them and I do not want them divided (the whole set about 15 minutes)
(c) They are with violin
(d) They are experimental in places and I may not like them when I hear them
– so say exactly what you think

Yrs
R Vaughan Williams

1. Presumably the song cycle Along the Field. The soprano Joan Elwes, accompanied by Marie Wilson, gave the first performance on 24 October 1927 at the Grotrian Hall in Wigmore Street.
