Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to J.L. Boston
Letter No.: VWL2599
The White Gates,
Dorking,
19th May, 1948
Dear Sir,
Dr. Shaw has passed on your letter to me.
It is over forty years since I edited the “English Hymnal”, but so far as I can remember I got the tune out of the Fitzwilliam Virginal book where it is ascribed to Farnaby; but it is obviously an arrangement of a traditional tune.1
Yours faithfully
R. Vaughan Williams
J.L. Boston, Esq.,

Oundle,
near Peterborough, Northamptonshire.
1. The particular tune referred to has not been identified.
