Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Imogen Holst

Letter No.: VWL947

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[19th May 1936]

Dear Imogen

I never thanked you for your dear letter.  I’ve been so rushed one way & another – it was so nice having you at the Fest – only we saw so little of you.1
I’m glad you have discovered the Verdi.2
My wife is certainly better & is on her sofa for the first time for over a month.
Love from

Uncle Ralph

1.  Imogen had visited the VWs for the Leith Hill Music Festival. Thereafter VW had been deeply involved in the first production of The Poisoned Kiss at Cambridge and thereafter at Sadlers Wells – see R.V.W.: a biography, p.211
2.  There had been a performance of Verdi’s Requiem at the Leith Hill Music Festival on 24th April, presumably the first time Imogen Holst encountered the work.
