Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Hugh Allen
Letter No.: VWL602
13 Cheyne Walk
March 3 [1926]
Dear Allen1
Would you please tell both Dr Mann2 and E.J. Dent how fearfully distressed I am not to be at the dinner on Friday.
Nothing short of necessity, i.e. a full rehearsal with band and chorus lasting till 7 o’clock would have prevented my coming. It is hardly necessary for me to tell you of my great admiration for Dent and of my high hopes for the future of Cambridge and therefore of English music under his guidance.3
Yours very sincerely
R. Vaughan Williams
1. Sir Hugh Allen, Professor of Music at Oxford.
2. A.H. Mann, organist of King’s College Cambridge.
3. Letter in Dent’s papers and presumably refers to a dinner given by Mann to celebrate Dent’s appointment as Professor of Music at Cambridge.
