Dear Allen¹

Would you please tell both Dr Mann² and E.J. Dent how fearfully distressed I am not to be at the dinner on Friday.
Nothing short of necessity, i.e. a full rehearsal with band and chorus lasting till 7 o’clock would have prevented my coming. It is hardly necessary for me to tell you of my great admiration for Dent and of my high hopes for the future of Cambridge and therefore of English music under his guidance.³
