Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Hubert Foss (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL1278

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

January 27 [1938]

Dear Foss,

I lately amused myself by making a translation – very free – of what I think a very charming work by Johannes Röntgen – Is there any chance that the O.U.P. would publish it? I understand that his publishers have no objection to a separate English version being issued. I need hardly say that I do not want any remuneration for my share in the work.
The composer’s address is
 Johannes Röntgen
 Amsterdam
 Brueghel Str: 9

(He is the son of Julius Röntgen)
Please let me have my printed copy back at your convenience.1
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams2

1.  Note by Foss addressed to Sir Humphrey Milford on the original:  ‘This seems a very charming little work: and I take it you will wish to do what RVW asks? HJF Jan 31/38’. The work was published as ‘The Tom-tits Nest. Three-part. Words freely adapted from a poem by G. Gezelle by R. Vaughan Williams … For Women’s Voices, a capella. London: Oxford University Press, 1938. 8ø. The Oxford Choral Songs. No. 566.’
