Dear Hubert

I always want to do what you ask. But in this case is it politic – one of the duties of your society will be to push (among other peoples) my compositions – can I therefore become president of such a society – what do you think?1

1. This almost certainly refers to the invitation to VW to become the first President of the Society for the Promotion of New Music, which he did in fact accept. The society was brought into being in January 1943. See R.V.W.: a biography, p.256-7.
