Letter No.: VWL3335
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
February 23rd 1958.
Dear Herbert,
I would love to have the Galliard and the Pavane dedicated to me1 – its all nonsense about your not being able to play them, of course you can: also, I should like to hear the new Mass.2 At the moment I am right in the thick of the Mat. Pash.3 so may we wait till March 6th, the day after the second performance, any time and for any meal, or March 7th, morning or early afternoon.4
Our love to you both
Ralph
1. Howells’ Clavichord comprised twenty pieces for keyboard dedicated to different composers; Book II nos. 2 and 3 are titled ‘Ralph’s Pavane’ and ‘Ralph’s Galliard’.
2. Probably Howells’s English Mass.
3. Matthew Passion.
