Letter No.: VWL5004

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Dec 3 [1937]

Dear Mr Temianka
I think my concerto sounds better with a small orchestra.1
I should like to go through the work with you very much before the rehearsals start.
I shall be in London on Jan 5th & 6th (Free on 5th before 2.30 or after 5.30 – Wednesday not until 4.30). Perhaps these dates are rather too early – if so I will suggest others.
Yrs ever
R Vaughan Williams

1. VW’s Concerto accademico, which Temianka was to perform at the Aeolian Hall in London on February 6 1937, conducted by VW. The work was later renamed Concerto for violin in about 1951 (Kennedy, Catalogue of Works, pp. 109-10).
