Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Harriet Cohen
Letter No.: VWL3089
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
May 17th 1955.
My dear Harriet,
I feel much honoured by your suggestion, but I fear it is impossible. In my opinion the President of a Committee such as this should take an active share in the work, and that I could not possibly do situated as I am. You may answer to this that there is no necessity for me to take an active share, but this would not make any difference to the fact that my conscience would not allow me to be a mere figurehead.
Love from
RVW
1. Harriet Cohen had apparently invited VW to be President of the Arnold Bax Society. He did agree to be a Vice-President (see R.V.W.: a biography, p.366).
