Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Gwen Beckett (BBC)

Letter No.: VWL1761

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

May 6 [1943]

Dear Mrs Beckett1

Thank you for your letter containing Sir Adrian’s very kind message –
May 25 (Tuesday) at Maida Vale will suit me admirably, either morning or afternoon, whichever suits Sir Adrian best.2
As regards guests I should like, if I may, [to] invite a few myself and of course Sir Adrian is at liberty to ask his friends – but I do not want any publicity about it and the door must be tightly shut against the press as such – (not of course in their private capacity)
Yours sincerely

R Vaughan Williams

1. Secretary to Sir Adrian Boult.
2. This was for a rehearsal of VW’s new symphony, the fifth (Catalogue of Works 1943/2).
