1. The VWs had gone to Prague for the first part of the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival, where the Pastoral Symphony had been given as the only British contribution. There had been a subscription to enable the work to be conducted by a British conductor (Adrian Boult). See VWL586 and VWL576. Rietz has not been identified.
