… and I pointed out to her that some of hers was the same as yours – which made her very unhappy because she had thought it was all her own to which I answered “You don’t understand me. I have always insisted that conventions are necessary in art and the composer has to select those conventions which suit him. The trouble with you young composers is that you so often make use of conventions which are not suitable to you”.

My only other news is that I’ve had a postcard from Elgar signed in his own hand.
