1. Concerning a criticism by Ernest Newman, the most influential music critic of his era. He was particularly vicious about VW, in particular waging war over On Wenlock Edge for decades. His Sunday Times article of 22 July 1945 was an encomium of Finzi’s Dies Natalis, prompted only by a study of the score. He continued to heap praise on Finzi in a continuation of the article on the 29th.
