Letter No.: VWL3345
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
June 28th 1956.
Dear Gerald,
Thank you very much for the Romance.1 Judging from looking at it, it seems to me that it ought to go from the bottom drawer to the top!
We believe we can come as Cheltenham will be over.2
We have found a tenor called Gold for the Passion: I hope he will be chrysostom.3
Love to Joy.
Yrs
Ralph
PS. I have told Rosemary4 to telephone about the cats: her number, if she doesn’t is Calbourn 272.
1. Romance, op.11, for string orchestra.
2. The Cheltenham Festival.
3. A reference to St John Chrysostom – the name meaning in Greek ‘golden mouth’. Bach’s Passion music was performed each year at Dorking.
4. Rosemary Ayres, UVW’s sister.
