Dear Gerald
I apologize heartily for last night. We all seemed to lose our heads at the same moment – usually when the conductor loses his head the choir pulls him through & vice versa – but in this case we all flopped simultaneously. I am glad you heard the rehearsal so that you will know it was not for want of trying.1

The Kensington News reported: ‘As an illustration of the great pains that Dr. Williams takes he made the choral societies repeat a first faulty rendering of “Nightingales” by Gerald Finzi.
