The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey
13th February, 1952
Dear Cockshott
I will try and make a few suggestions to you:1
I think, firstly, some of the older people ought to be represented:Parry, “Blessedt Pair”; “De Profundis”, Stanford, “Stabat Mater” and “Shamus O’Brien”.
I think the Elgar ones are obvious.
Holst: I suggest “Planets”, “Hymn to Jesus”, “Ode to Death” and “Egdon Heath”.
Bax: Symphony no.3 and his last one, which I think is No.9.2 “Garden of Fand” and pianoforte Quintet.
Britten: “A Boy is Born”; “Ceremony of Carols”, “Peter Grimes” and I suppose the “Spring Symphony.”
Walton: “Belshazzar”, Symphony, Viola Concerto.
Milford: “String Suite”.
Tippett: “Child of our Time”
Finzi: Intimations of Immortality Dies Natalis
Butterworth: “Shropshire Lad”. “Green Willow
I should think that is enough for them to go on with.
I fear you must get someone else to advise you about my works.
Yrs R Vaughan Williams
(R. Vaughan Williams).
Gerald Cockshott, Esq.,
Whittingehame College
1. Perhaps in connection with Cockshott’s post as a teacher at Whittingehame College.
2. In fact Bax wrote seven symphonies.
