I should like to see your essay very much.
I think it very likely that the plainsong as we sing it now is very different from what it was when the church first took over.
By the way you ought to get in touch with Duncan Jones (Dean of Chichester) who had a young French friend who has some weird but interesting ideas on the origin of plainsong
But being French he is probably no longer available
