The White Gates,
Dorking,

13th April, 1949.

Dear Mr. Stegmann,
I do not usually give my autograph to strangers, but in your special case I am sending you a signed photograph.
You ask for my opinion about the influence of British Folk music. I am certainly of the opinion that the knowledge of our own Folk music has profoundly influenced the younger composers, and has added a new interest to their work. The younger composers, of course, refuse to recognise this, but nevertheless the influence is there, just like the influence of our language, our climate and our customs, whether they want it or not.
Yours sincerely,
R Vaughan Williams
(R. Vaughan Williams).
