Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Frank Howes

Letter No.: VWL4477

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

June 12th 1954

Dear Howes,
I have rashley1 undertaken to give three lectures in U.S.A. on the “Foundations of Music”, and have come to the conclusion I know nothing about it. (This probably does not surprise you.) Can you suggest any books which would help me? – (other than folk song books?) Especially I want to read up the controversy as to whether music, espescially2 scales, originated from the singing voice or from making holes in a pipe.
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams
