Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Ernest Newman

Letter No.: VWL4224

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

August 28 [1940]

Dear Mr Newman
Thank you for your answer to my letter.1
Can you come to a meeting at the Royal Academy of Music at 2-30 on Wednesday Sept 4?
I have a promise from Sir Cyril Asquith that the case of musicians shall be “sympathetically considered” – So I suggest that we should now meet and discuss action and among other things draw up a list of interned musicians. Could you bring your contribution to such a list as complete in detail as possible?
If you cannot come could you send your list to me.
Yours sincerely
R Vaughan Williams

P.S. I quite see your point – But I feel that each section of society ought to concentrate on its own section (e.g. I believe the artists are appealing through Augustus John[)]

1. See VWL4323. VW  had sought support for interned musicians from his fellow musicians.
