The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

24th December, 1952

Dear Bessie

Thank you very much for your letter and this sends you all good wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
I listened-in to Mr. Jones’ Symphony , but did not make much of it. It was very long and rather incoherent to my mind, but I was tired when I listened, and I think I fell asleep over part of it!1
Love from

Ralph

1.  Daniel Jones’s Symphony No. 2 (1950) was broadcast twice in December – on the Home Service on 17 December (BBC SO / Walter Goehr) and then on the Third Programme on 18 December, by the same performers as part of a different programme. The third symphony had been broadcast in June so this was by no means a new work.
