Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Edmund Rubbra
Letter No.: VWL3592
From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.
October 16th 1957.
Dear Edmund
Thank you for your composition of Friday. It gives me great pleasure to think that the younger composers wish to connect my name with one of their inspirations. It gives a feeling of continuity to the great art which we serve and will insure that the line goes on unbroken from generation to generation.1
Yrs

1. Rubbra’s setting for SATB of Louis Macneice’s The Givers, Op.96, was one of the new works written by his ex-pupils and friends in honour of VW’s 85th birthday, and performed at a Macnaghten Concert on 11 October 1957; see R.V.W.: a biography, p.384.
