Thank you so much for your letter, and you know how I value your appreciation.We were desolated not to be there.1 I hear that John2 was well enough to be able to conduct at the last concert. I listened in to the broadcast of your symphony3 – a fine performance of a fine work.

1. A performance of VW’s Eighth Symphony.
2. John Barbirolli. He was over-working and at some point collapsed from exhaustion. He was made by his doctor to rest for a day in July, and had to stand down from three Promenade concerts in August.
3. The broadcast of the performance of Rubbra’s Sixth Symphony, performed at Cheltenham Festival on 17 July, conducted by Barbirolli.
