THE LETTERS OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Dr Mary Grierson

Letter No. VWL3050

Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Dr Mary Grierson

Letter No.: VWL3050

The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

11th October, 1950.

Dear Dr. Grierson,
The fault was entirely mine. I ought, of course, to have remembered and kept Donald Tovey’s letter, but it entirely slipped my memory.

The bass drum roll on the 4th. bar is not in the printed full score, but I may have added it for that performance, but I fear I cannot remember. I hope you will narrate the (1910?) incident because I should like it to be placed on record the help I received from my old friend.1

Yours sincerely,
R Vaughan Williams

Dr. Mary Grierson,
12, Crawford Road,
Edinburgh.

1. See VWL3049 and VWL3048. Grierson was writing a biography of Tovey.
