Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Dorothy Howells
Letter No.: VWL2504
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
October 17th 1952.
Dear Dorothy,
I have just seen in the paper that it is Herbert’s sixtieth birthday today, so may I add my good wishes to him to my thanks to you?  I liked having your letter very much.
Now, while I have the opportunity, may I add something?  I must not of course pry into your private concerns, but it seems to me and many others that Herbert after some years of incubation has suddenly burst forth into a new birth.  Could you persuade him to give himself leisure to write more splendid works like the Hymnus?1
Yrs affectionately
Ralph
