From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[About 26th July 1939]

My Dear Denis

I am so sorry to let you down – but we have definitely had to drop the Ballet on Oct 24th & 25th owing to various difficulties.  I do hope you have not missed anything good by your kindness.1
Yrs sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1.  On the difficulties (arising from Douglas Kennedy’s unwillingness to prepare the ballet The Bridal Day), see VW’s letters to Ursula Wood, VWL1593 and VWL1218.  When the work was eventually performed on television in 1953, Denis Dowling took the speaker’s role.
